PNB
- All PNBs must be diagrammed at recognised PNB locations.
- PNBs must be diagrammed at locations where the driver signs the route.
- PNBs at depots are not to be diagrammed to those traincrew depots who do not sign those routes.
- Breaks shown within diagrams exclude walking time, which must be added.
- A 30-minute PNB must be provided between 3 hours and 6 hours.
Maximum driving time
Non-stop (continuous): 4 hours 30 minutes maximum.
Stopping: 4 hours maximum.
Measured from when a driver takes charge of a train (REL, PU, PP or PC) until the driver TCs or is relieved. If a diagram books a driver to pass on the same train between spells in charge, this does not constitute a break in the four hours.
This limit can be exceeded by a natural break of 20 minutes (including any walking, change-ends, PC etc.) at an agreed location. At Waterloo, 30 minutes applies.
Agreed locations include all PNB locations plus:
| Location | Times of use |
|---|---|
| Alton | Ticket office opening hours only. Mon–Fri: 06:30–19:00 Sat: 07:30–17:30 Sun: 08:30–16:00 |
| Kingston | No time restriction |
| Weybridge | No time restriction |
| Hampton Court | No time restriction |
| Westbury | No time restriction |
Route knowledge
See Traincrew Depot and Station Rules. Permanent diagrams must be constructed to allow links within depots that meet the route retention requirements laid down by Operational Standards.
Traction knowledge
See Route and Traction Knowledge section of the Compendium.
Train preparation
Fleet staff prepare (PU) trains at: Bournemouth Depot, Clapham Yard, Farnham C.H.S., Fratton Depot, Northam C.S.D, Salisbury Depot and Wimbledon Park Depot. Drivers are shown to 'PC' units, except at Salisbury Depot where drivers relieve at departure time.
- At Farnham C.H.S., drivers may be shown to relieve on departure, but only if there is not enough time to PC (STP).
- Where class 455 units are berthed at Farnham Depot a PU must be shown before departure.
- At Farnham, Feltham, and Strawberry Hill Depots, if a unit departs PM (after arriving in the AM), a full PU must be carried out.
- At all other locations, units should be fully prepared (PU) or partially prepped (PP) once every 24 hours — normally when the unit first enters service that day.
Locations where PP can be carried out:
- Basingstoke — Barton Mill, Up Yard, Down Yard & Down East End Sidings
- Bournemouth platforms
- Eastleigh DCS
- Exeter New Yard
- Guildford platforms and all sidings
- Portsmouth Harbour
- Portsmouth & Southsea platforms and DCS
- Reading
- Southampton Central platforms
- Staines Sidings
- Waterloo platforms and South Sidings
- Woking Bay platforms and Up Yard
- Weymouth platforms
- Windsor
- Yeovil Sidings
Train disposal
At locations where TC is allowed, all units will normally be shown 'TC' by the driver when face-to-face relief is not taking place. At Salisbury "Hop up" point, drivers will be relieved by depot drivers.
Altered diagrams (STP)
- Alterations extending duty length by up to 60 minutes will be published under the original diagram number.
- Alterations extending beyond 60 minutes will result in the original diagram being cancelled and an additional diagram issued.
- The maximum diagram lengths based on booking-on times must be observed in any alteration.
