Walking times
See Depot & station rules A–Z.
No additional walking time is to be shown in respect of CRE or DRE activity, which already includes a walking allowance.
Length of duty
Between 6 hours and 11 hours.
- No more than 10% of the total diagrammed instances of work across the Company can be diagrammed up to 11 hours.
- Diagrams between 10 hours 30 minutes and 11 hours are to be notified to Company Council and discussed as necessary.
PNB
- All PNBs must be diagrammed at recognised PNB locations.
- Breaks shown within diagrams exclude walking time, which must be added.
- PNBs must be diagrammed at locations where the guard signs the route.
In all diagrams, guards will be allocated either:
- One minimum 30-minute break diagrammed between 2 hrs 30 mins and 7 hrs 30 mins; or
- Two minimum 20-minute breaks diagrammed after the first 1 hour.
Additional rules for longer duties:
- For turns in excess of 9 hours, the single 30-minute break should ideally fall between the fourth and seventh hour.
- For turns in excess of 9 hours with two 20-minute breaks, both breaks must be diagrammed after the second hour.
- For turns in excess of 6 hours 30 minutes, the second 20-minute PNB must not be placed at the end of the diagram.
- Where the 30-minute PNB in a diagram over 8 hours falls before the third hour, or in a diagram over 9 hours falls outside the fourth and seventh hour, copies will be provided to Company Council at the April and November meetings to discuss possibilities of reducing them at the next timetable change.
Route knowledge
See Route and Traction Knowledge section of the Compendium. The minimum frequency for guards to operate over a route is once in 6 months.
Traction knowledge

Guard to check ECS — Aldershot and Farnham
A 'Guard to Check ECS' note must be added to all passenger trains which terminate and form an ECS move. In addition:
- 4-car stock: add 2 minutes to the guard diagram.
- 8-car or above: add 4 minutes.
- Where a 4-minute dwell is not possible due to pathing constraints, this may be reduced to 2 minutes.
Guard to check ECS — Yeovil Junction
Where a passenger train arrives and then forms an ECS (DOO), show 'Guard to Check ECS'. Guard duties will be complete when ECS departs (i.e. book off 18 minutes after departure).
Guard to check ECS — other locations
Where it is the responsibility of the guard:
- Up to 6-car stock: add 2 minutes to the guard diagram.
- 7-car or above: add 4 minutes.
- There may be exceptions in the timetable; where the guard is passing on or working the empty forward, this is to be accepted.
- Guards will need to check diesels at Woking if terminating there and forming an ECS.
At any location not listed below, check local station information for staff operating hours (see the RO Coverage Summary document). If an ECS is booked outside of staff operating hours, the guard must be shown working the ECS.
